Mei Chan from Fullmetal AlchemistSeamstress/Model:
A-Kon 2011Construction Notes:
A labor of love for a character who does not get nearly enough recognition within the fandom, Mei is probably one of the most time-consuming projects I've worked on, simply because she wears so many layers: undershirt, pants, spats, leggings, shirt, tunic, sash, wrap -- the majority of which had to be patterned. The white parts of the costume are a heavy denim, all other portions are kona cotton except for the lavender wrap, which was made from a nicely textured upholstery fabric. Every piece of the costume is lined, with the exception of the pants, and all edges are slipstitched (ie, no visible stitching).
And then there is the wig. I began with an Ashanti -- [link]
-- and about 5 packs of matching extensions, half of which were sewn into the cap to bulk it up, the other half of which I spent 5 hours braiding. (Have you ever braided hair for 5 hours? "Fun" is not an adjective I would use to describe it.) I made the grossly unwise decision to criss-cross part the back of the wig, which ended up taking about three times as long as just sewing in a row of wefts to part. Never again. The pigtails were stubbed and the long braids attached, then the entire stub was wrapped with layers upon layers of braids to form an odango. The bangs were styled with clear tacky glue to maintain their silly pointies. I slip the sides of the wig over my ears, since Mei has tiny little ears and a HUGE, ROUND derp-face.
Xiao-Mei was a lucky last-minute purchase at Walmart. She actually moves and makes adorable baby panda sounds! One day I'd like to either make or commission a more accurate plush, since Xiao-Mei makes so many hilarious faces. C:Other Mei Uploads:[link]
