Construction Notes: It's amazing the difference that a good wig can make for a costume. I wore this last summer and was generally unhappy with how it looked and photographed, but after several months of stewing over what had gone wrong, I was able to pinpoint the wig, which was much too platinum and modern in style -- too "Barbie" for an ancient deity. Wanting to give the costume another try, I chose a dark blonde (my natural colour, oddly enough) in a longer, slightly curled style. Not only does it frame my face and upper body better, but the darker colour compliments the costume so much more and allows the tiny details to pop a bit. I still haven't been able to get around to all the beading I'd like to add to the scarves, but I did add a few bits and bobs here and there, as well as tweak the jewelry I had made. All in all, I'm infinitely more pleased -- it always stinks to work so hard on a costume and then hate the way it looks on you -- and think I'll be wearing her quite a bit more in the future. Thank you to Sonja for the beautiful photography!
For anyone curious, this costume is adapted from an artbook image by Yoshitaka Amano -- [link] -- that seemed to fit my vision of how Persephone might have looked in her youth, prior to her abduction to the Underworld. I still have plans to make a darker, more grayscale Persephone as representative of her latter life as Queen of the Underworld at some point in the future. I also feel I ought to state that it was never my intention to create a historically accurate Greek costume, though that would also be quite fun for a future project!
